\n\nOnce again demonstrating that ILC and EVIL are stupid acronyms, Canon has announced the G1x, essentially a G-series body wrapped around a slightly-larger-than-four-thirds sensor (it has a crop factor of ~1.85 vs. 2 for MFT). Given Canon's past performance in the sensor / RAW-processing department relative to Panasonic and Olympus, we can confidently expect the G1x's sensor to put four-thirds sensors to shame. (It's also nice to see that Canon has restrained itself somewhat in the megapixel department.)\n\nI think that having competing cameras named GX1 and G1x is ridiculous. But we gotta have the magic X.\n\nIf you're keeping count, this means that in the ILC (\"interchangeable lens compact\") and EVIL (\"electronic viewfinder interchangeable lens\") market, we now have the following significant contenders:\n
\n\t- Panasonic GX1, Olympus EP3, Nikon J1, et al (no viewfinder except as accessory)
\n\t- Fuji X100 (fixed prime lens)
\n\t- Canon G1x (fixed zoom lens)
\n\t- And the fast-fixed-lens, slightly-bigger-sensor \"premium\" compacts such as the LX5, XZ1, G-series, and S-series.
\n
\nAs with the Nikon V1, the main problem with the Canon G1x is going to be price. For $799 it's going to compete with cheaper DSLRs and cheaper LNCs with better viewfinder options and/or interchangeable lenses. And the V1 can get you bokeh if you use an F-mount lens, or one of its big zooms, but the G1x neither has the aperture nor the reach for much bokeh. But if you compare MSRPs then the G1x compares pretty favorably to, say, the G1x ($699) plus the X-series compact 14-42mm zoom ($399). Then there's the question of autofocus speed, which is very good on almost all rivals.","$updatedAt":"2024-06-05T09:10:30.271+00:00",path:"low-noise-compact-canon-g1x",_created:"2024-07-09T20:29:46.511Z",id:"4629",_modified:"2024-07-09T20:29:46.511Z","$id":"4629",_path:"post/path=low-noise-compact-canon-g1x"},"page/path=blog":{path:"blog",css:"",imageUrl:"",prefetch:[{regexp:"^\\/(([\\w\\d]+\\/)*)([\\w-]+)\\/?$",path:"post/path=[3]"}],tags:["public"],source:"",title:"",description:"",_path:"page/path=blog"}}
