Remember Freescale? They're Motorola's CPU division spun off as a separate company (concentrating on the embedded market) after Motorola gave up on the desktop CPU market. Aside: Apple originally used Motorola 680x0 CPUs in Macs (sub-aside: the 6502 used in the Apple I/II/III computers was from MOS Technology, although it was designed by a bunch of ex-Motorola folk, creating a certain software aesthetic in the Apple milieu which persists to this day), but passed on the 88xxx series RISC, encouraging Motorola instead to join with it in a joint venture with IBM -- it was known as the AIM alliance -- to create the PowerPC CPU family. Apple started out using a combination of Motorola and IBM parts, but Motorola lost interest in the desktop CPU market, and Apple increasingly relied on IBM for its CPUs. Motorola then spun off Freescale Semiconductor in order to concentrate on the cellphone market. Freescale has apparently been trying to sell tablet concepts very much along the lines I've been hoping for (i.e. dockable keyboard) but made in the inimitable "cheap plastic, lousy design" style of PC clones. Freescale says they can hit the $199 pricepoint (but then the OLPC folks think they can hit the $75 pricepoint with a tablet) -- of course a tablet running Linux and Flash with 512MB of RAM is going to suffer from all the pointlessness Joe Wilcox assigns to the mythical Apple tablet in his contrarian piece and none of the up-side. Second Aside: I don't know why folks bother saying "Android or Linux" -- that just means "Linux or Linux" doesn't it? Why not say "Ubuntu or Debian or Linux"? At least we don't get five stories on how Linux has been ported to a new kind of toaster any more, but do we need the same cycle for Android? And then Chrome OS? So Freescale thinks it can sell a (fairly useless) 7" tablet for $199, Joojoo thinks it can sell a (slightly less useless) 12" tablet for $399.
