Now the interesting thing is that anyone can buy music from Apple's iTunes Music Store, burn the music to CD, rip it, and play it anywhere they like. And if the Europeans consider this \"piracy\" to be \"natural and legal\" Apple sure isn't stopping anyone from doing it.
OK, where's the outrage over...?
DVD region encoding. Legally purchased US \"zone 1\" DVDs won't play in consumer DVD players in Europe, Britain, or Australia. (Three different zones, incidentally.)
Nintendo Gameboy Cartridges. I can't play the games on my Mac, my PC, or my toaster oven. Why not?
CD players required licensing patents from Sony and Philips until the patent expired.
I own a bunch of ABBA on Vinyl. I should be given a copy of each album on CD for free, or the cost of the media.
Sony PS2 games won't work on my XBox.
XBox games won't work on my Sony PS2.
Intel chips won't execute PowerPC instructions, even though these are well-documented and in common use all over the world.
Mac software won't run on PCs.
It goes on and on. In each case, there's a technical component to the issue (a completely artificial one in the case of DVDs and DRM techniques in general) and a business decision. Nintendo could easily provide emulator software for their older machines and/or sanction the use of said emulator software allowing their (older) games to run on everything from cell phones to laptops, but they don't. Not doing so is easier (requires no effort) and makes them more money (they can sell you a port of your favorite Super Nintendo game to the Nintendo DS or your cell phone).
If you make this kind of behavior illegal or impossible you're simply preventing producers of entertainment content (games, books, movies, whatever) from selling their products on whatever terms they like. Singling out Apple is hypocrisy, pure and simple.
Remember that these are the folks who won't let us call our sparkling white wine \"Champagne\" even though we all know exactly what it is we want at the wine store.","$updatedAt":"2024-06-05T10:51:21.399+00:00",path:"hypocrisy-and-the-itunes-music-store",_created:"2024-07-09T20:34:15.811Z",id:"41",_modified:"2024-07-09T20:34:15.811Z","$id":"41",_path:"post/path=hypocrisy-and-the-itunes-music-store"}}
